Goal: When Riley ABA & Autism Center, an organization providing high-quality, individualized therapeutic services to children diagnosed with autism, outgrew its facility, it purchased a historic building within Kansas City’s Brookside neighborhood. The Wolferman building was built in the early 1900s and housed one of Kansas City’s original grocery stores, followed by other businesses. Within this space, our client wanted to create an environment that was colorful, stimulating, and playful to aid their team in fulfilling their mission.
Scope: Due to the age of the building, it would require extensive renovations, including flooring solutions. The biggest challenge was the fact that the entire first and second floors would need to be completely leveled to provide a stable foundation. This was achieved using Schonox’s AP Rapid Plus self-leveling system. With the help of a pump, we were able to give the building (nearly 13,000 square feet) a brand-new substrate in just a few days.
Once the floors were ready, our team went to work, creating a vibrant environment with multi-colored LVT tiles throughout the facility’s hallways and funky, complementary carpeting within its offices and meeting rooms. The team also incorporated black and white checked LVT within its large prep kitchen/dining area and additional common areas.
One of the most innovative spaces is an interactive, 1,000-square-foot play town, which includes several child-sized buildings to stimulate real-life play in (a hair boutique, animal hospital, ice cream parlor, gas station, and more). It includes a “road” down its center, constructed by our team out of LVT, that is surrounded by green carpeting representing grass for the town’s playground and picnic areas.
It’s a fun and dynamic center for kids to learn, grow, and develop their abilities!
