Goal:
Culligan, a valued client for over 10 years, was looking to either relocate or renovate their current headquarters in Olathe, Kansas. After careful consideration, they decided to stay in the building they already owned and start a phased renovation to meet their space goals. Candice Shum, the third-generation family member overseeing the office, wanted to bring more natural light into the space, retain privacy for employees, and create a more modern aesthetic that would more closely align with their company’s brand image.

Scope: After several design meetings and visits to our Lenexa showroom, we determined that the perimeter office walls should be removed and glass demountable walls installed to help brighten the space. To maintain a bit of privacy, 3M vinyl film was applied to invite light through but obscure full views inside. We also updated existing closet doors with 3M Di-Noc material to modernize and match new interior doors (see photo insert). This process allowed us to reuse the existing product while limiting employee disruption and construction time. In addition, our commercial flooring division, FDC Contract, installed new carpeting with a more organic pattern and cohesive colors to coordinate with the carpet we installed several years prior.

For the conference room, the goal was to integrate technology and create a more interactive environment. A standing-height table and comfortable stools were selected to allow for both quick touchdown meetings, as well as extended virtual conferences.

Finally, Candice wanted her office to provide a welcoming environment to foster employee engagement and also serve as a quiet retreat for heads-down focus work. The solution was to combine two offices into one, allowing for the integration of a desk, lounge area, and a small meeting area within the space. As Candice enjoys being a part of the design process, she added her own finishing touches with wallcovering, artwork, and accent pieces.
